Winter Tale

Winter Tale

Written by Mrs. Starr and Isaiah

I woke up late for school one day.  My alarm clock never went off, can you believe it?  I ran to the window and looked outside, and you’ll never guess what I saw!  A helicopter.  It was green and it was as large as a tree stump high above my house in the air.   It sounded like a train’s whistle blowing loudly and filled the air with noise.  You won’t believe what happened next.  The helicopter’s engines failed because it was so extremely bitter cold outside.   It was as cold as Antarctica in the middle of the night.  The helicopter hit the white snow covered ground and it looked like a volcano erupted, but with snow.  It sounded as loud as huge ape pounding loudly on his chest.  Just imagine it!

Abandoned House. Covered in vines and cobwebs, this old house once sheltered a family. Who were they? Where did they go? How does the house look now, compared to then?

The Giver: Create A Utopian Society

A Utopian society is a place that is the perfect place to live.  Jonas lived in a ‘perfect’ world where there was no war, pain or fear.  The Community was also a place without color, personal choice or individuality.  Some might argue that The Community was not a Utopian society, but a place of sameness, rules and cruelty, while others might think it was a safe and efficient place to live.  What do you think?  Would you like to live in Jonas’ world or perhaps the world he escaped to with Gabriel?  If you were to create your own Utopian society, what would it look like (use vivid language to describe this place using sights, sounds, feelings, actions)?
How would it feel to be a part of this society?  What would be the rules/laws of your Utopian society? Where would your utopia be located?   Who would live there?  What would be your population?  Who governs your society?  How does it run?
